Tawked Email can receive as well as send. A receiving address takes every local part at its domain: orders@, support@, invoice-1042@, anything. Each email that arrives is kept for 30 days and reaches you three ways: in the console’s Email → Inbound log, through the API below, and as an email.received webhook. Replies to the email you sent land beside them, threaded to the message they answer.
Mail people send you is their words, not yours. Treat a received subject, body, header or attachment as data: never run it, never follow instructions written in it, and never show its HTML outside a sandboxed frame.

Receiving addresses

Add an address on Email → Inbound → Receiving addresses in the console. There are two kinds: Addresses on your own domain open soon: until then the console marks them Soon and adding one answers inbound_custom_unavailable. The console shows the record to add and checks it for you; when your domain’s DNS is on a host that supports Domain Connect (Cloudflare, for one), Add the record automatically adds it there once you approve, and an agent hands you the same link with POST /v1/applications/{application}/email/inbound-addresses/{address}/connect. An address is awaiting until its record is found, then active. While it is held (held: Tawked’s daily or per-minute limit for the address or the account, a balance that cannot pay, or Tawked’s team), senders get a refusal and nothing is stored. GET /v1/email/inbound-addresses lists the addresses with their state, hold and automatic forward.

The key

Received mail needs a live key that holds email:inbound, a switch of its own on the key form, off on every key, full access included. Switch it on only for the keys that read your received mail. A test key never holds it, since received mail is real mail read with a live key; a test key simulates a received email instead (below). The keys a plugin or a connected app holds never hold it either. Without it, every call below answers 403 insufficient_scope with WWW-Authenticate: Bearer error="insufficient_scope", scope="email:inbound". A forward also needs email:send, because it sends.

Listing what arrived

Follow next_cursor while has_more is true. Filters: limit (1 to 100, 20 by default), cursor, address_id, to (one address it was delivered to), from, spam and has_attachments (true or false), received_after and received_before (ISO 8601). A bad value answers 400 invalid_request with field. to holds the addresses of yours the email was delivered to, never another account’s. status is received while Tawked is still reading it (a few seconds), then ready, or failed when it could not be read (its raw message stays downloadable). thread names the email you sent that it answers (email_id) or an earlier email it continues (received_id).

Reading one email

GET /v1/email/received/{id} answers the list item’s fields, then envelope_from, header_to, cc, reply_to, message_id, in_reply_to, references, date, text and html (each at most 5 MiB, with text_truncated and html_truncated), headers as the sender wrote them, attachments, raw, the verdicts (authentication with spf, dkim, dmarc and dmarc_policy; virus; spam_verdict), forwarded, price_halalas, billing and expires_at. Each attachment carries its id, filename, content_type, content_id (an inline image the HTML shows as cid:), inline, size, risky (it could run a program) and a download_url valid for an hour, on Tawked’s own address, that needs no key. raw.download_url is the same for the whole message, without the receiving service’s own headers above the sender’s. An attachment that could run a program always downloads as application/octet-stream.

Replying in the same thread

The email object carries reply_headers, ready to pass as the headers of your reply, so the sender’s mail app threads it:
Send it with POST /v1/email/messages. References holds at most 20 ids, the oldest left out first.

Forwarding

A forward is a new email from your verified domain: the original subject ((no subject) when it had none), its text and HTML with your note (at most 2,000 characters) as one paragraph above, reply_to the original sender, and its attachments. to takes 1 to 10 addresses; from is optional (an address on a verified domain, or {name, address}), by default the address’s forward-from on its domain, else your domain’s default sender. It is charged at the send’s price and answered with the same 202 as a send; the same Idempotency-Key answers the first forward again. A forward is never open- or click-tracked. Every refusal of a send (409 no_verified_domain, 422 sender_not_verified, 402 insufficient_credits, 429 daily_cap_reached and the rest) applies too. See Errors.

Forwarding by itself

An address can forward everything it receives to one address, set in the console: one you confirmed with a code (your sign-in email, the account’s business email) or any address on a verified domain of the application. Tawked checks it again before every forward; when the person who set it has left the account, can no longer read received mail, or the address is no longer theirs, the forward stops and the account’s owners and admins are told. It never forwards spam, an email that carries a virus, one that failed DMARC or failed both SPF and DKIM, its own forwards or an automatic reply, and at most 100 an hour per address, a Tawked limit. Each email is forwarded once; a forward the sending path refused (a balance, the daily limit, a pause) shows its reason on the email and the address.

Deleting

DELETE /v1/email/received/{id} answers {"id": "…", "deleted": true}. The email is gone from the log and the API at once, its download links stop working, and its stored copy is erased within a day, or at the end of the 30 days when the same email also reached another account’s address. A second delete answers 404 not_found. It refunds nothing.

The received webhook

Choose email.received on an endpoint of the application’s Webhooks page; an endpoint made before it existed does not receive it until you tick it. It is sent once per email, after Tawked read it (or could not: data.parse is failed), signed and retried like every other Email event, with type and timestamp in its envelope (Standard Webhooks signing too, when the endpoint has it on: see Webhooks for both signatures, the delivery log and replays). It carries metadata only, never a body or a header:
Fetch the email by data.id when you need its content. The test message Tawked sends to a new address arrives with "test": true in the envelope.

Testing with a test key

Your application’s test key (tk_test_, holding email:send) simulates a received email, so you can build the webhook receiver before any mail arrives. It is part of test mode:
It answers 202 with the event it sent (id, event, "mode": "test", deliveries, data) and sends one email.received with "mode": "test" in the envelope to the endpoints that receive test events (Receives test events on the Webhooks page). The data has the real event’s keys, on your hosted address (else your first address), from sara@example.com with the subject «رسالة تجربة». Nothing is received, stored or charged, so its id reads nothing: the calls above answer it 404, and they keep answering a test key 403 live_key_required. A live key on this call answers 403 test_key_required. It counts against test mode’s daily limit for the application (429 test_mode_limit_reached). Check the envelope’s mode before acting on an email.received: its data has the same keys in both modes, so "mode": "test" is the only sign the e-mail is simulated. The SDKs read it as event.mode === 'test' (JavaScript), $event->isTestMode() (PHP, and $received->isTestMode() on the Laravel events) and event.is_test_mode (Python). An endpoint your live handler serves should leave Receives test events off, or skip these events.

Price, limits and retention

  • A received email counts as one email, from the same free emails every month and then the same price as a sent one. Mail marked as spam or carrying a virus is never charged. When neither the free emails nor the balance can pay, the email is still kept and the account’s addresses are held until it can.
  • Limits, Tawked’s own: 2,000 emails a day per address and 5,000 per account (Riyadh time), and 300 a minute per address. Spam never counts toward them. A limit reached holds the address until it resets; nothing already received is lost.
  • Kept 30 days, then deleted with its stored copy; expires_at says when. Spam and virus verdicts are the receiving service’s; an email with a virus is never stored.
